What is white noise, exactly?
White noise is sound with equal power at every frequency your ear can register, from about 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. The name borrows from light: white light contains every color, white noise contains every pitch. Played together, all at once, they blur into a texture with no tone, no rhythm, and no surprises — a hiss.
That last property — no surprises — is the whole reason it helps. Your auditory system is a threat monitor that never fully clocks out. Even in stage 2 sleep, the brain keeps responding to changes in the sound around it. Not sound itself: changes in sound. A bedroom at 30 dB that jumps to 60 dB when a door slams is a 30 dB change. The same slam over a bed of steady noise at 50 dB is a 10 dB change. The slam didn't get quieter. It got less different.
How masking works
Engineers call it sound masking, and it's the same principle offices use to make speech less intelligible across a room. Three things are happening when you run a noise bed at night:
- The floor rises. The gap between background and interruption shrinks, so fewer sounds cross the threshold your brain flags as an event.
- The spectrum fills. A siren cuts through silence partly because its frequencies are unoccupied. White noise already has energy parked at those frequencies, so the siren has to compete.
- The texture stays constant. Attention habituates to steady signals within minutes. Your brain files the hiss as "room tone" and stops spending effort on it.
None of this is mystical, and none of it requires white noise in particular — rain, a fan, or brown noise masks too. White noise is simply the reference version: maximum coverage, no tonal character.
What the evidence says
Honestly: helpful in noisy rooms, unproven as a general sleep enhancer. A 2021 systematic review in Sleep Medicine Reviews looked at 38 studies of continuous noise for sleep and found the overall evidence quality low — some studies showed faster sleep onset, some showed nothing, and a few raised the possibility that all-night noise fragments sleep slightly. The clearest positive results come from loud environments: one frequently cited study of patients in an ICU found white noise reduced arousals by raising the masking floor. A 2017 study of city dwellers found participants fell asleep around 38% faster with white noise on.
In practice that means the tool below is for a specific problem: a bedroom with traffic, a thin wall, a snoring partner, a hallway. If your room is already silent, white noise adds little — and preference matters more than physics. Some nervous systems read hiss as calming; some read it as static. Yours gets a vote.
How to use it tonight
Press play, then set the volume so the noise sits just above the sounds you're trying to cover — and no higher. Around 50 dB is the common recommendation: the level of a quiet conversation, loud enough to mask a door, quiet enough to talk over.
- Volume: start at 30% here and adjust upward only if interruptions still cut through.
- Distance: speaker across the room, not on the pillow. Distance smooths the sound and protects your ears.
- Timer: if you only need cover to fall asleep, set the 30-minute timer — it fades out slowly rather than clicking off.
- All night: fine at moderate volume, and better than on-off cycling if your noise problem runs until morning.
A note on ears, because it's the one place to be conservative: hearing damage is a dose of volume × time. Eight hours at 50 dB is nothing. Eight hours at 85 dB — earbud volume many people use casually — is an occupational-safety limit, not a sleep setting. For babies, keep any machine about 2 meters from the crib, at the low end of its range; an infant can't move away from a speaker or tell you it's too loud.
Where noise fits in a wind-down
Noise handles the room. It can't do anything about the other thing that keeps people awake, which is the voice in your head running tomorrow's meeting at 1 a.m. In practice the combination works better than either alone: a masking bed to settle the room, and something deliberate for your attention. The differences are tonal, not medical — no color of noise has been shown to produce deeper sleep than another. Play all three for thirty seconds each and keep the one your shoulders drop to.
