528 Hz is the centerpiece of the modern solfeggio-frequency tradition. The short history: in the 1990s, naturopath Joseph Puleo and author Leonard Horowitz published work deriving six "ancient solfeggio frequencies" from a numerological reading of the Book of Numbers, assigning each a purpose. 528 Hz drew the biggest claims — "transformation and miracles," the "love frequency," and, most famously, DNA repair. The frequencies were presented as those of the medieval Gregorian solfeggio scale; music historians find no evidence medieval chant was tuned to these specific frequencies — fixed-Hz tuning itself is a modern concept, since reference pitch varied by century and city.

None of that stops the tradition from functioning as ritual, and this site doesn't mock ritual. A tone with a story attached is easier to return to nightly than a tone without one. Just know which part is story: the number's provenance is 1990s numerology, not archaeology.

What evidence exists

The DNA-repair claim has no support in molecular biology — airborne sound at listening volume doesn't do that, at 528 Hz or any other frequency. What the small research literature does contain:

  • A 2017 Japanese study (Akimoto et al.) had 9 participants listen to 528 Hz music and measured reduced salivary cortisol and increased oxytocin versus 440 Hz versions. Nine people — a pilot, not a proof.
  • A 2019 rat study reported reduced anxiety-like behavior after long 528 Hz exposure. Rats, not sleepers.
  • The broader, better-supported finding: slow, soft, predictable audio of many kinds lowers arousal measures. Pure tones qualify. Nothing shows 528 Hz outperforming its neighbors.

Fair conclusion: listening to 528 Hz can be genuinely relaxing, for reasons that have little to do with the number 528.

How to use it

  • Volume low. Pure tones are fatiguing at volume. Start at 30% here and drift down until it's barely present — an ambient hum, not a note demanding attention.
  • Ten to twenty minutes during wind-down, or set the sleep timer and let it fade after you're asleep.

You get melody, texture, and easier long listening; you also get whatever the composer put in, which varies from lovely to landfill. The small studies that exist (including the 2017 cortisol pilot) used music, not bare tones, so if you're chasing the studied condition, music is closer to it.
