What is pink noise?
Pink noise is random noise with equal energy in every octave instead of every frequency. Each octave doubles its frequency range — 100–200 Hz spans 100 Hz, while 5,000–10,000 Hz spans 5,000 — so keeping the energy per octave constant means power falls about 3 dB per octave as pitch rises. The result sits exactly between white noise's flat hiss and brown noise's heavy rumble.
The reason that particular tilt matters: your hearing is roughly logarithmic. You perceive octaves as equal steps, not hertz. White noise — equal energy per hertz — packs half its power into the top octave you can hear, which is why it sounds top-heavy and "staticky." Pink noise distributes power the way your ear distributes attention. It's the noise that sounds even.
Why it sounds like rain
Steady rain is a decent natural approximation of a pink spectrum: thousands of small impacts on roofs, leaves, and pavement, summing to broadband noise with real low-frequency body. Wind through trees, waterfalls, and surf heard from a distance all sit near pink distributions too. That's a practical advantage — a texture your brain files under "weather" habituates easily, and nobody's threat system has ever been alarmed by drizzle.
The evidence — including the interesting part
As a masking bed, pink noise works the same way as any steady noise: it raises the background floor so interruptions register as smaller changes. The general evidence for continuous noise and sleep is modest and mixed — a 2021 systematic review rated it low-quality overall, clearest for noisy environments.
Pink noise, though, has one genuinely interesting research thread of its own. In several small studies — notably Northwestern's 2017 work with older adults — researchers played short pulses of pink noise timed to the slow oscillations of deep sleep, and measured enhanced slow-wave activity plus better memory recall the next morning. That's real, peer-reviewed, and frequently misquoted. The technique is acoustic stimulation locked to an EEG reading of your brain in real time. A generator playing continuously all night is not doing that, and no continuous-playback study has reproduced the effect. Use this page to mask a noisy room, not to install memories.
How to use it tonight
- Volume: just above what you're masking, around 50 dB. Start at 30% and nudge up only if needed.
- Placement: across the room, not under the pillow — distance smooths the texture and spares your ears.
- Timer: 30 minutes covers most sleep onsets; the fade-out is gradual, so there's no click to notice.
- For babies: pink's balance makes it a common nursery choice — same rules as any machine: about 2 meters from the crib, low volume, and it's a tool, not a requirement.
- All night is fine at conversation volume. Hearing risk is volume × hours; 50 dB for eight hours is a non-event.
Where it fits in a wind-down
Pink noise handles the room's texture; what your mind does inside that texture is a separate choice. Pink noise in the nursery
Pink is the color most parents land on, and the logic is sound: newborns spent nine months inside a womb that measured around 70–90 dB of low-frequency whoosh, and a rain-like spectrum is the closest gentle approximation. The safety rules matter more than the color, though, and they're specific. A 2014 study in Pediatrics tested 14 infant sleep machines at maximum volume and found several exceeded 85 dB at crib distance — adult-workplace-limit territory. The fix is simple and standard:
- Place the machine (or speaker) about 2 meters from the crib — never on the rail or under the mattress.
- Run it at the low end of its range; if adults must raise voices over it, it's too loud.
- Use it for settling, not as an all-night requirement — a noise-dependent sleeper travels badly.
- Skip earbud-style anything for infants, always.
Handled that way, a pink bed in a nursery is a masking tool like any other: it makes the hallway floorboard a non-event. It does not make a baby sleep through the night. Nothing sold under $60 does.
